 GoKart Kit Overview

The  GoKart Kit is an add-on for the miniPRO / Ninebot S, claiming the title as one of the first GoKart / hoverboard modification kits. What’s more, this GoKart kit actually increases your top speed, as claimed by Segway. This kit makes a great addition to anyone’s arsenal, perfect for both kids and adults. Riders have more freedom than ever, thanks to easily adjustable frame length to support a range of rider heights.

Further capable of supporting up to 100 kg (220 lbs), making it a great “gift for the kids” (namely, yourself)! Not only this, but this add-on kit is actually incredibly easy to retrofit onto both your miniPRO or Ninebot S, taking us a maximum of 10 minutes on average to fit. Both extremely easy to assemble/disassemble and extremely convenient and portable, collapsing and fitting into the majority of cars.

Speedy & Safe

Back to the topic of speed, both the miniPro and GoKart kit offer a variety of speed settings, with overall speed being enhanced by the kit. Whilst the original miniPRO Segway offers ample speed from its two powerful 800W motors, the GoKart kit powers past the standard 10 mp/h max speed. Feel free to choose from Novice (5 mp/h), Standard (11 mp/h) and Sporty (15 mp/h) speed settings, perfect all manner of skill sets. That’s an extra 5 miles per hour on top of an already decent max speed, putting it as one of the faster hoverboards on the market, once kitted out.

Described by Segway as a “drifting machine”, and we see why! This carefully planned kit offers amazing centre of gravity and weight distribution, allowing riders to drift with ease and without flipping. Those concerned about safety, the GoKart features a strengthened seatbelt to help ensure driver safety, alongside a extremely responsive high steering ratio of 2. 1:1, allowing riders to easily pull of precise steering and maneuvering. Further offering two layer impact protection, incorporating an plastic, energy-absorbing outer layer helping to reduce impact force. The inner layer also uses a steel main beam, providing both high-strength protection for the body and preventing damage to the body.

Your flashy new GoKart even allows you to fully reverse and employ the use of both a manual and electric handbrake; perfect for those riskier riders who enjoy pulling off handbrake and J-turns. Simply double-tap the brake pedal to enable reverse mode when stopped and away you go! Furthermore, the GoKart Kit also offers full drifting capacity, being one of the few (if not only) hoverboards on the market to drift. Of course, at this point one could argue whether we’re still riding a hoverboard or a GoKart.

Speed, Power & Distance

Being an add-on kit for the miniPRO/Ninebot S, one should expect similar speed, power and distance offered by your modified hoverboard model. However, this GoKart Kit offers 3 speed settings to choose from, 2 of which are faster than the unmodified miniPRO. Furthermore, these speed settings are available in the Segway app, also meaning you have full Segway mobile support! These settings include: Novice (5mph), Standard (11mph), Sporty (15mph). As previously mentioned, this kit will actually increase the top speed of your miniPRO by about 5 mp/h (Sporty setting). Whether or not the model of your hoverboard (miniPRO/Ninebot S) have an impact on the top speed remains unknown to us, as we only tested it with the miniPRO. However, we assure that this kit is perfect for racers and casual riders alike, catering to a number of needs for speed.

Gives ample power & goes the distance

Whilst officially offering an average max. range of 13.7 miles (22 km), battery life varies depending on driving mode, rider weight, speed and terrain. Riding on the Standard speed setting with a 64 kg rider on flat terrain, we reached a range of 9 miles (15 km), which is still fairly impressive. The miniPRO propels itself thanks to two powerful 800W motors, with the Ninebot S featuring two equally powerful 400W motors. Not only this, but the GoKart kit amplifies performance with the addition of two of its own 800W motors to help you leave competition in the dust.

Due to this and other variables, we’re still unsure whether a converted Ninebot S offer increased performance or the same. As it stands, we see no such information to suggest this would be the case; however standalone the Ninebot S marginally outperforms the miniPRO, although they both offer very similar performance.

How fast does it go?

Speed settings:

Max speed of 15 mph (24 km/h) with a number of speed settings. Take your pick from Novice (5mph), Standard (11mph), Sporty (15mph). This GoKart conversion kit offers an additional two 800W motors on top of your existing hoverboard motor performance. Whether you’re using the GoKart kit on your Ninebot S or miniPRO, expect a more than subtle speed boost.

What age/weight is it suitable for?

The GoKart conversion kit enables your hoverboard suitable for a variety of weight, ages shapes and sizes. Designed with an adjustable frame and steering wheel, this kit best suits riders between 6′ 3″ – 4′ 5″. In terms of weight support, the GoKart kit offers support for up to 100 kg (220 lbs). Heavier riders should expect reduced performance, such as slower acceleration, lower max. speed and battery life, etc. We’ve seen reports that this conversion kit is suitable for ages 8+, although we weren’t allowed any kids for testing, unfortunately. For perspective, an average 10 year old boy is 4′ 7″ and weighs around 45 kg (100 lbs) and an entirely suitable rider; However, we would recommend only allowing them to ride on the novice setting… You don’t want to get shown up and outclassed by a kid, do you?

What is the range/distance?

Average range: 13.7 miles (22 km).

Please note: The total distance offered by this kit varies on rider weight, terrain, incline, speed and other such variables. However, a standard rider (60-70 kg, Standard speed setting, flat terrain), should expect an average range of approx. 13.7 miles (22 km). Furthermore, those powering through on the Sporty setting should expect an average range of around 9 miles (15 km), although this isn’t confirmed by Segway and are the results of our testing. Of course, we don’t expect casual commuters to require this for their trips to work (unless they want to be the coolest person in the office). Therefore, we expect that the average rider of the Segway Go Kart is someone just having fun, without caring too much about speed & distance; perfect for an hour or 2 of fun.

Battery Life & Charging

On average, this Go Kart kit (fitted to miniPRO) takes an average of 4 hours to charge with a battery life depending on a number of variables. These variables include rider weight, speed, terrain, incline and more. With no official battery life in time from Segway (only average range), we decided to test it for ourselves. Please note, these stats may not represent your performance and for the purpose of simplicity, we’ve factored out rider weight. At constant max. speed of the Sporty setting (15 mp/h), riders should expect a battery life of just under an hour. As it stands, this is quite a lackluster battery life in comparison to other hoverboards on the market.

However, this isn’t a hoverboard: it’s a dual 800W Go Kart kit also running on your Ninebot S/miniPRO motors. As such, we should expect reduced battery life for greater performance, it’s also pretty hard to maintain a constant 15 mp/h. Next up, driving at Standard mode max. speed (11 mp/h), an average full charge will last around just under an hour and 20 minutes. Lastly, the Novice setting offers the best battery life with the lowest speed at 5 mp/h. As such, riders should expect an average battery life of just over 2 hours and 30 minutes. As previously mentioned, this relies on variables such as rider weight, terrain, etc. and times stated are approximate.

How long does it take to charge?

Fully charges in 4 hours, same as Ninebot MiniPro. Quite a long charge time in comparison to other hoverboards on the market, although this Go Kart kit isn’t like most on the market!

Battery protection & safety

As such with most (if not all) Segway products, a high emphasis on production quality and safety is maintained throughout development and manufacturing. Rest assured that your Segway and its Go Kart kit offer one of the safest and most comfortable ride on the market. Standalone, the Go Kart kit features IPX4 waterproofing, resulting in offering water resistance to splashes from any direction. This means that full waterproofing is not offered with the Go Kart kit and as such, users should ride with care.

Furthermore, the Ninebot S / miniPRO both feature an IP54 waterproofing rating; offering slightly increased protection from dust and also water splashing from any angle. This also means that your hoverboard interior is protected from a number of solid objects. Whilst offering moderate water protection, this Go Kart kit is by no means waterproof, so keep it dry. Learn more information on IP waterproof ratings here. The Ninebot Go Kart features both an electric footbrake and manual handbrake, should the electric one fail. From a max. average speed of around 15 mp/h, the Ninebot Go Kart has a braking distance of 20 ft (6 m), fairly impressive and responsive!

How long will the battery last for?

As previously mentioned under battery life & charging, average battery life depends on rider weight, terrain, driving style and speed.

Design and Ergonomics

As with all Segway products, the design of this Go Kart kit is of extremely high quality design and material. This kit features a reduntant power application, meaning both wired (main) and wireless Bluetooth (standby) methods are used to communicate between the GoKart and hoverboard. Should a malfunction in the main wired method occur, your GoKart will instantly switch to Bluetooth. Those enquiring about portability need not worry, the GoKart kit easily and conveniently collapses to fit into most car trunks. Perfect for portable racing on the go, whilst also being extremely easy to assemble; just strap on your Ninebot S/miniPRO, match your height and away you go.

Drift ’til you drop!

this Go Kart as a “drift machine”. As such, its manual mechanical handbrake makes popping off those hair-raising handbrake turns a breeze. the GoKart is the first ever GoKart made to drift. Further featuring a non-inflatable hollow tire that offers both increased drift performance, durability and also convenient to maintain. Another feature previously mentioned is actually quite rare to find in a Go-Kart, the reverse feature. When stationary, simply double-tap the brake pedal to enable reverse mode and off you pop. Double-tap once more when stopped to switch back.

Strong & Sturdy

Weighing just 32.2 kg (71 lbs), this kit supports weights of up to 100 kg (220 lbs), just over 3 times it’s own weight! The Segway Go Kart kit ensures additional safety through the redundant brake system. This double braking system helps riders activate emergency braking through a manual hand brake in emergencies, or should the electronic brake pedal fail. Lastly, the GoKart Kit also features two layered impact protection, with an outer plastic layer designed to absorb energy during collisions. This reduces impact force whilst also protecting the inner layer, crafted from a durable, yet lightweight steel frame to protecting and preventing deformation of the scooter.

Can it be used as a regular GoKart?

No, this kit is designed to transform the Ninebot miniPRO. Without a miniPRO, expect to be doing a lot of innovation before getting this kit on the road! However, with a miniPRO/Ninebot S and charged up, it will operate just like an electric Go Kart.

Does it connect to your smartphone via app or Bluetooth?

Yes, the mobile app allows the use of a number of additional features. Check and set your driving speed limit/cruising range, get updates on vehicle condition, control lighting, take tutorials and more!

Build quality and ease of use

As mentioned prior with all Segway products, a high standard of build quality is ensured. This is reached throughout the various stages of rigorous testing during production and using only the highest quality materials. In terms of ease of use, the Ninebot GoKart kit is extremely easy to assemble and add on to your Ninebot S/miniPRO, taking 5-10 minutes maximum if you’re being overly cautious. Furthermore, the Segway Ninebot GoKart folds up efficiently into the boot of most cars on the market, making transporting this portable Go Kart an easy task. Further featuring a strong seat-belt and backup braking systems to ensure a high level of safety.

Keep your Kart pristine!

With all the awesome features and design choices mentioned prior, we don’t feel the need to go into too much detail about the build quality; it speaks for itself! However, one cool feature yet to mention is the status indicator. This indicator comes in three colours: blue, yellow and red. Blue represents normal condition of the vehicle, with yellow representing batteries needing to be activated or replaced in the front compartment. Lastly, red indicates a performance failure in the vehicle; you’ll have to check the app to diagnose the cause of failure and contact support. As an incredibly reputable and longstanding brand, Segway offer extensive customer support and requested warranty for official purchases.

Safety and usability on the road

Capable of reaching 0-12 mph in just 2 seconds, featuring both an electric footbrake/manual handbrake and a top speed of 15 mp/h on 4 wheels; the Segway Go Kart kit is probably one of the most suitable “hoverboards” available for road use. With 3 speed settings to choose from, take your pick from the slow and fast lanes, although we wholeheartedly recommend riding this on the sidewalk (if legal). The Segway Go Kart also features built-in headlights, helping ensure safety and visibility on the road during day and night. Whilst the sturdy seat belt won’t help you much should you have a head on with a car, it does add an additional level of safety and protection against minor crashes. Lastly, the responsive brakes should help most riders avoid rear ending any unfortunate pedestrians or cars, offering a braking distance of 20 ft (6m).

As previously stated, the Segway Ninebot GoKart kit features IPX4 waterproofing. This does not mean that your GoKart offers full waterproofing and as such, users should ride with care.
